The Lord of Pain is worded so that its ability triggers whenever you cast your first spell on each turn
That still leaves a lot of room to the imagination, but Ill be digging up commanders with unique rules text, ones that ask you to build around a unique subcategory of cards, or ones that require warping an entire deck around them, preferably something youd never build without that exact commander encouraging you to do it
Sometimes you have a Thought Scour or two and its a non-issue, but I would happily play more Thought Scours if theyd let me plus Darkblast is perfectly serviceable on its own
With slightly different dimensions, these cards are intended to be used in special formats with rules that modify normal games of Magic

You may notice that Act of Treason and similar effects specifically give the target creature haste that way, you can attack with your opponents creature and hopefully win the game before you have to give it back
