Vermillion-orange trumpets and silver-green leaves dazzle everyone

as much like woodland soil as you can muster

particularly toward the branch tips

The species is a New England and Midwestern native

light red new growth in spring becomes brilliant red in summer

Hypericum cerastoides, Trailing St. John's Wort columnar Vermillion-orange trumpets and silver-green leavesBright yellow flowers with a starburst of stamens cover a soft, dense mound of small, oval, blue gray green leaves in late spring mid summer. It's good in the rock garden or trailing in a container, but do give it water in the heat of summer and cut back after bloom for best performance. It likes to be fairly dry in the winter so if you can place it a bit under an eave (in the NW or the eastern US) where it will also get sun, it will stay the course.
