It makes things better, gives you card draw, and usually makes expensive cards very cheap to cast
Hideaway now causes you to put the rest of the cards on the bottom of your library in a random order instead of any order
You might take away their fourth land or their preferred three drop but that won't actually do anything for two or three turns which greatly reduces the value of Blackmail being one mana
All of these work, however, the less random and more "unfair" cards should be less frequent and at higher rarities
In more recent years, color hosers are fewer, weaker, and more situational, and part of that is that some of these older cards simply make it so that one person cant play Magic at all, which isnt exactly fun, as pointed out by Patrick Sullivan
