I believe that WotC's current financial results strongly suggest that the overall answer is No. Yet I also believe that we cant think about Magic as a single game (as it was 30 years ago): modern MTG is more like a collection of different games that happen to share game pieces, and some of those games are more welcoming to new pieces than others
As for Pioneer, Tibalts Trickery is just unfun to play against
As with all MTG Companions, while the ability may not appear mind-blowing on its own, it's the ability to fire it off consistently that really causes trouble
