It's simply a very good card, and can be played in a wide number of decks
Where shrines truly shine is in Commander and Limited, where you have more time to set up, more color flexibility, and plenty of early value to snowball into something big
One of this decks weaknesses is that it is so heavily built around Yawgmoth that Counterspells can be quite effective
If your opponent doesnt have a sacrifice outlet (such as Altar of Bones), they wont be able to get his Commander back to the Command Zone
