Its not quite as complex as Madness/Delirium from the previous blocks, but it doesnt really suffer for that
As long as you keep another creature or two and play some extra lands, the +1/+1 counter doubling goes nuts and makes the math really difficult to oppose in combat
Then again, people didn't play with Juzam Djinn and Serendib Efreet for the same reason
Remember that you make tokens if your non-tokens are destroyed, removed, bounced or exiled, which so happens to include a lot of board wipes
When you have a load of disposable tokens and are not facing any removal while also being in Mardu colours the Butcher of the Horde can out perform Falkenrath but this doesn't happen
Conclusions As card advantage has been spread more widely between colors (not being only in blue), black has gotten better at it
