Cards like Defiler of Vigor will grow your entire board and make your creatures cheaper in the process while Forgotten Ancient will just casually grow in the background and plop all its value onto an even better attacker
Its not as good here as it is in most Mono-Black builds, as you dont have sacrifice outlets or a very high value target to return, but its still a very good card versus the green and red decks

Some require so much setup to be good that you don't really need them at all
If an effect exiles Summon: Esper Maduin and then instructs you to return it to the battlefield, it remains face up in exile (unless that effect instructs you to put it onto the battlefield transformed, in which case it returns as Summon: Esper Maduin)
That means most decks see their entire board presence destroyed, while artifact and Eldrazi decks are left unscathed
