My best guess as to why they chose a drain for the black mode was that they wanted something a little less board altering but potentially impactful in the late game (where it's all about "the clock"i.e., how many turns before someone dies)

Humans because there are simply so many of them, especially in white, where you can run multiple Champion of the Parish without watering down the card quality in the rest of the color
