Here is the text in "non-confusing-speak": Whenever a player plays a counterspell or plays a card that makes use of counters, you get to choose to do one of the followingcounter the next spell
If you cast a spell "without paying its mana cost," you can't choose to cast it for any alternative costs
While this isnt as efficient as bringing them back to the battlefield, it does mean you get any cast triggers you need, along with ensuring you dont have to sacrifice anything along the way either
